Shell USA has awarded Conbit a contract to replace the crane cabin on the Seatrax Series 72 crane located on their Mars platform. The Mars platform, a tension leg drilling and production facility, is situated in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 200 km southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana.
The crane cabin, weighing 3,000 lbs (approximately 1,400 kg), is positioned more than 20 meters above the main deck. To successfully lower it to the laydown area, the cabin needs to be moved approximately 10 meters horizontally. Due to its location, no regular crane can access the crane cabin, posing a unique challenge for the Conbit team.
To address this challenge, Conbit utilized a modular lifting system, manually erected at the crane cabin access platform. This system enabled the safe lifting of the crane cabin over the edge of the platform. Once the cabin was positioned over the side, the load was transferred to a lift line connected to the crane boom. A second lift line, also attached to the crane boom, facilitated the horizontal movement of the crane cabin until it reached the designated laydown area.
The project was executed by a team of highly skilled technicians qualified in both rope access and rigging. This specialized team ensured that the project was completed efficiently and safely. The offshore work, involving four technicians, was successfully completed within 8 days, demonstrating Conbit's commitment to delivering high-quality solutions in a timely manner.
