PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP), Thailand’s national oil company, awarded Conbit and its long-standing partner CR3 a contract to replace the high-pressure (HP) flare tip at the Erawan facility. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 250 kilometers northeast of Songkhla, the Erawan facility is a complex comprising six main platforms connected by bridges. The flare tips are positioned on a bridge linked to the Central Process Platform, presenting unique engineering and logistical challenges.
The flare tip, weighing 2.2 metric tons, is installed a top the bridge, which is not designed for an integrated lifting system and is only accessible during shutdowns. Adding to the complexity was the narrow shutdown window and the need to align the replacement operation with the optimal environmental season. To overcome these hurdles, Conbit configured a modular lifting system specifically for this project.
The lifting system, constructed from lightweight, hand-carriable components, was installed on the lower section of the bridge. This modular design allowed the equipment to be transported to the end of the bridge without requiring heavy machinery, making it ideal for the Erawan facility's layout. The system extended beyond the bridge's structure, enabling luffing around the platform while ensuring that the loads were applied to its strongest points.
The actual lifting operation was powered by high-speed winches strategically positioned on the main deck of the Central Processing Platform. These winches ensured precise, efficient, and safe handling of the flare tip, minimizing downtime and ensuring that the project adhered to the tight schedule.
The crew consisted of five flare tip handling specialists, supported by CR3's rope access and mechanical technicians. Their expertise was instrumental in ensuring the smooth execution of the project, from meticulous planning to on-site implementation. The collaboration between Conbit and CR3 demonstrated a seamless partnership, drawing on nearly two decades of experience working together in Thailand and across the region.
This enduring partnership has consistently delivered innovative and reliable solutions, helping clients overcome complex challenges. For the Erawan facility, Conbit and CR3 combined engineering excellence, advanced equipment, and skilled manpower to achieve a safe, timely, and cost-effective outcome.
PTTEP has been a valued client of Conbit and CR3, entrusting the partnership with more than five flare tip replacements in 2024 alone. This trust reflects the client’s confidence in the team’s ability to deliver high-quality results under challenging conditions. For this project, as with others, the work was completed safely, within budget, and ahead of schedule.
Conbit and CR3 look forward to continuing their strong relationship with PTTEP, contributing to the safe and efficient operation of their facilities in Thailand and beyond.
By leveraging Conbit’s modular lifting systems, CR3’s skilled technicians, and a history of collaboration, the Erawan flare tip replacement was a resounding success. The project not only highlights the strength of the Conbit-CR3 partnership but also reinforces their commitment to delivering innovative solutions for clients across the region.
