Guy Wire Tensioning - Fadhili, Saudi Arabia

Onshore greenfield work

Saudi Aramco awarded NSH to install five flares at the Fadhili complex in Saudi Arabia. Due to Conbit’s vast experience in guy wire structures, NSH sub-contracted this project to Conbit. Conbit then inspected and maintained the guy wires six per flare and ensured that all five flares were vertical.

Scope

Conbit prepared extensive plans and engineering designs for guy wire tensioning, equipment set up, installation, and removal procedures. They prepared the project well in advance, starting with the calculation reports and method statements. The team prepared drawing checkups, site surveys, and engineered new calculations to provide the complete solution.

Guy wire tensioning operation

Conbit’s structural engineers recalculated all required values to tension the guy wire. The guy wire tension varied from 36.3kN for the bottom to 147.3kN for the top wire. Conbit provided the inspection, tension measurement, and re-tensioning of all guy wires and controlled the verticality of the stack in the process. Furthermore, Conbit supplied a tension record list to the client upon completion.

Before starting the tensioning work, the five stacks had been erected and aligned vertically, with 50% of the required pretension in the guy wires. Conbit checked the measuring report, where they followed the tensioning procedure accordingly. They initially installed the tension line using its chain hoist to the required pretension value shown from the load-cell shackle.

In the end, the crew continued transferring the presentation until all pretension was in the guy wire instead of the tension line. A finished operation is when the load-shackle showed zero loads (only the own weight) and didn’t show any lower values, resulting in the tensioning stopping

On-site challenges

One of the biggest challenges Conbit faced was to ensure effective and consistent communication throughout. Due to the multiple nationalities present on-site, it was crucial that all communication was prepared in advance and that all team members were available and briefed ahead of operations.

Conbit, a part of Mammoet, worked alongside the local Mammoet colleagues to optimize the project's efficiency and minimize the need for traveling personnel from Europe.
